The Hidden Data Inside Your Photos (and How to Remove It)

August 14, 2025

When you post a photo, you’re not just sharing a sunset or your cat being weird - you might also be sharing your home address, exact location, and even your phone model.

What's Hiding in Your Images

Photos contain hidden EXIF data, which can include the exact GPS location, date, time, and device model. This is like a hidden diary attached to every picture you take.

Why This Matters

This isn't just for celebrities. This data can be used by stalkers, burglars, or anyone with malicious intent to find out where you live, work, or spend time.

Some platforms strip EXIF data before showing photos, but strangers, small websites, or direct sharing usually won’t - that’s where the real risk lies.

How to See for Yourself

Want to know what your photos are secretly saying?

Try our Client-side EXIF Tool.

It works entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device, and lets you see (and optionally remove) hidden EXIF data.

To see EXIF data on your phone:

  • On iPhone, open the photo and swipe up or tap the "info" icon (i) to see the details.

  • On Android, open the photo in the Google Photos app, then swipe up or tap the three dots to view the details.

To see this data on your PC:

  • On Windows, right-click the photo and go to Properties > Details.

  • On Mac, right-click the photo and select Get Info.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Turn off Location or Geo-tagging in your camera settings.

  • Use our EXIF Tool to remove hidden data from your photos before sharing. It works entirely in your browser - your images never leave your device.

Be mindful of what you share, and remember - sending photos as documents (on WhatsApp or other messengers) keeps all the hidden data intact. Only do that with people you trust completely.
